Picking as it is referred to on the History Channel’s website has numerous names. Call it treasure hunting, dumpster diving, modern archeology or recycling America, picking has evolved well past what grandma used to do at the flea market. Be it stocks or antiques the way I was raised to “pick” was to take something that has a greater value than what you pay for it and then flip for the increased amount.

Now what this show is it breaks the vow of silence that has long surrounded the pickers I’ve grown up with. The mere thought of someone gaining access to the treasure troves of the world’s best junk and it not being the purveyor of Memphis Surplus is enough to elicit some real interesting words out of him.

Even more so interesting is the interaction between the pickers and the hoarders. Hoarders are a great resource for pickers, but anyone who has ever dealt with a hoarder knows....the hardest part is getting the grizzled good ol’ boy to part with his beloved..(fill in the blank).

This gem never had the opportunity for the exposure provided by the internet. When this 62-64 Melroe was purchased out of the junkyard in the mid seventies never did the owner think it would make to 1.) a Lake Erie Island and 2.) on to the web via The Memphis Surplus crack social media staff. She boasts a 76 Horsepower cooled engine with a 2200lb capacity.

In what the owner says is a combination of two old time horror classics Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein and The Creature from the Black Lagoon the bobcat has seen it fair share of mad mechanic jerry rigging and terrifies neighbors like the infamous gillman from the old time classic.

So to keep his own little frankenstein rolling he’s taken the time over the years to add some bits and pieces. New (salvage) hydraulic lines from WWII military surplus allow the hydraulics do lifting, Mallory Marine plugs and wires (you guessed it from memphis surplus) keep that engine a firing, and the crown gem is the Harley Davidson exhaust on the back. Recently brought to our attention are the efforts of those over at project 1320. Its a real neat group of people whose goal as stated by their own website reads:

“PROJECT 1320, a series of television documentary films, will capture the historical perspectives of the pioneers of the sport. The goal is to film first-person narratives coupled with still images and old movies of the period, to tell the stories of "Who, What, When, Where, Why" of our heroes and legends in their words.”

Thats right do names like Big Daddy Don Garlitz, Edelbrook, Mr. Gasket and the like ring a bell? Its going to be a great television documentary, and really going to give us a look into a unique sector of the racing industry.

Not far from our store a local area inventor has recently been awarded a grant to further his invention. Much like we take what we can from retail and wholesale outfits as to prevent wasting hard goods, and to provide a benefit to our customer the innovations over at Tremont Electric let its customers save on a whole different level: Energy. With their new invention the company and its founder are looking to harness the kinetic energy that people produce when doing some of their favorite activities, hiking, running, etc., and allow them to use it to power a whole plethora of personal electronics and other things. This past weekend Memphis Surplus was on hand at American Chevelle Enthusiasts Society 2008 Regional event that was being hosted Northern Ohio Chevelles Clubs. Our stand and staff was on hand and got to see some of the regions premier chevelles and also to provide and avenue for show participants to have access to our great surplus deals without heading to our actual show. The event lasted two days (August 15th and 16th) and was great.

Madison Village hosted the annual Lakewood Car Kulture Show the past weekend Saturday August 16, 2008.

A full collection of Hot Rods, Customs, Antiques and Classic Cars, Vintage Motorcyles Bobbers and Choppers lined the closed street. The show encompassed much more than just some awesome rides, it paid homage to the hot rod kulture and lifestyle. Numerous vendors and local area businesses such as lowbrowcutoms, and the burning river rollergirls also tended to stands on the sides of the road. Walking down the street one could hear Ace Brown and The Ohio Valley Boys compete with the rumble of hot rods and choppers while the sun reflected off the clear coats all afternoon. Some familiar rides and clubs showed up. Of the clubs noted were members of Choppers Hot Rod Association and our friends over at the ROLLERS Car Club.

Overall it was a great show and the participants shared some real unique rides, and we here at Memphis surplus shared some of our print advertising.

This past weekend the Motorheads Car Club and Mr. Gasket- Prestolite Performance presented their World Famous Car Show and Garage Sale. Several members of the Memphis Surplus staff attended and checked out the killer rides that were there. Not only were there sweet rides there were also huge value deals available on all sorts of Mr. Gasket products. The Mr. Gasket- Prestolite staff and the Motorheads Car Club really went all out to put on a great show which benefitted the Rainbow Babies Children's hospital. Starting last month, the treasury began sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. Eligible applicants could receive up to almost $600 dollars. Well.... what are you going to do with your check from the government? This past Saturday was the Max Hayes Career & Technical High School Custom Car Show. Thankfully the weather cooperated and some of Memphis Surplus's finest employees had a chance to cruise by the show and check out some of the hard work that people had put into their rides.

This past weekend the Cleveland area Choppers hot rod club hosted their annual show. Memphis Surplus was there to represent, and we did. The whole show went off without a hitch. We'd like to thank everyone who made the show possible and commend all those hot rodders that do such a great job with their phenomenal rides.

Somebody told me that Spring started on March 21st. Yeah that may a way to think if you're following that pesky Vernal Equinox and that whole planet orbit around the sun b.s. Other than that I have seen very little proof. They tell me the temp is rising, but about the only sign I've seen of spring being here starts today at 3:05 p.m.

That's right the tribe is back on the war path. Certain online sportsbooks even have the Indians at 10-1 odds of winning the World Series. So hold tight folks they say that the weather will break for spring soon.... and if its still grey out go ahead and kill sometime by browsing our online store, or stopping by this weekend.

Yesterday the United States Census Bureau released the numbers for U.S. retail and food service sales for the month of February. These sales decreased .6 percent (+/- .5%) from the previous month. With all this talk of a recession creeping in on our economy its hard not to take notice of a figure like this.

Now I am unable to speak for the whole surplus sector, but in an off the top of my head estimation I believe our sales are up. Why? Because our prices are affordable and we have great customer service, we provides deals that are great when the wallet gets thin. So don’t let this hiccup in our economy stop your from wrenching on your ride, soldering in some new electronic parts on that board you’ve been working on, or buying much needed supplies to keep your shop running. Heading back from stocking inventory at Memphis Surplus just over an hour ago I saw a truck that truly encompassed pride in 'Merica.


Now if you can't quite make out what is going on on the tailgate because the bald eagle in front of old glory has distracted you, I'll be happy to explain. Uncle Sam is rolling up one of his sleeves and making a fist, much like the banner that hung from the ceiling during Toby Keith's performance of "Courtesy of The Red, White, Blue" at the end of his show for the "Shock and Y'all" Tour. The angry fist is lined up to hit what appears to be an airliner flying towards Uncle Sam. I wasn't exactly able to make out the details, but there appeared to be a small likeness to a terrorist on the nose of the plane.

This past weekend I caught half of the Grindhouse Double feature "Death Proof." "Death Proof" is Quentin Tarantino's most recently released movie. It is a tribute to all things B Horror movie orientated. So how could a B horror flick have anything to to do with this blog? Well in the movie the three heroines who end up battling a sadistic stunt car driving murderer pay tribute to "Vanishing Point," by test driving a 1970 White Dodge Challenger and discussing some the finer points of the flick. Vanishing Point is ranked #3 as far as hotrod magazine determined on its website here in a survey of the greatest movies ever.
At Memphis Surplus, however, Vanishing Point is currently ranked #1, as it is the only DVD owned by the store. As soon as our in store big screen tv is hooked up it will be most likely be splitting time between the SPEED channel, local area sporting/motorsport events and on those extra slow days one might catch a glimpse of "Vanishing Point", in the background. Don't worry we'll have the remote handy for any of the racy scenes or to watch the racing scenes again.

Off the pages of a random issue of Biker Magazine, I found inspiration for my gift to my parents for Christmas. After my folks viewed the dvd I took it back and watched the documentary. Featured in a biker magazine article "Riding Solo To the Top of the World" turned out to be a a pretty cool dvd. There is only one person in the film, and he also served as the camera man, director and film editor. In his epic journey he heads from Delhi(the site says Mumbai, but the map on the dvd showed Delhi who knows what is going over there), India to the the Changthang Plateau in Ladakh, bordering China. All of his belongings are on his back or his bike.

Its pretty interesting to watch him traverse such extreme foreign terrains on his motorcycle. The journey somehow truly encompasses the American biker mentality, strangely, in India. So from the crowded streets of what appears to be Delhi, to some ancient temples that have rarely been seen by western eyes, all the way to the plateau where the air is so thin he can't even get his engine to fire, the dvd is definitely worth a watch. Not quite Easyrider, but worth look.

If you're interested in picking up a copy for yourself go ahead and check out Dirt Track Productions website . I ordered, paid with PayPal and did not have any problems. The package showed up a couple weeks later albeit in a package labeled "Award winning documentary, NOT PORNOGRAPHY." Hilarious.

Having recently purchased Guitar Hero III, I have spent way to much time as an adult playing a video game. To my surprise though, the music available on the game is pretty awesome. Awesome in particular when “Story of My Life” by Social Distortion (the game actually has a cover band doing it) comes up on the screen. I had attended the most recent Social D show in Cleveland, albeit about a year and a half ago at The House of Blues on October 4th, 2006. The show was awesome so I took it upon myself to see if Social D was touring in the Midwest any time soon. The answer to that is no, according to the “Official Social Distortion Website.”

On the website though it links to Black Kat Kustoms. Black Kat was founded in 2003 by lead singer Mike Ness. Its existence seems to parallel the same beliefs that propelled the bands unspoken creed of discontent and pride in being a dissenting individual while embracing the outlaw culture so often found on the west coast. Part of that culture seems to have always been bikes, cars, hotrods and choppers.

All that crap said, go and check out the website here. They have a small photo gallery, some wicked apparel for sale and an interesting interview with Hess by Cole Foster of Salinas Boys. If you make friends on the internet you can check out their myspace page here.

A popular local book in our area is titled "Whatever Happened to the 'Paper Rex' Man?" The book looks into local Cleveland area history and talks about better days. I suppose the demographic that the book was aimed at people who grew up in the first half of the 20th century. Anyway as legend has it:

"...the buckboard's metal wheels rolling over the neighborhood's red brick streets, the clopping of the big old horse's hoof, and most clearly, that certain way of calling out: 'pa-a-a-per raycks,' [People] all thought the paper-rags man yelled "paper-rex," and yet all knew that he was the man who'd pay you for newspapers, rags and certain items that he knew how to recycle to sell to salvage companies."1

Aside from Memphis Ave. and W. 48th being the location of our store it also happens to be on one of the old Paper Rex Man's routes. Though long before my time, and the well before the store's time the Paper Rex Man inspired a generation of entrepreneurs including the founder and controlling director of Memphis Surplus.

So in remembrance of the "Paper Rex" man we here at Memphis Surplus will do our best to provide an inventory that truly shows that one man's junk, surplus or salvage truly is another man's treasure.

Thats right everyone loves capacitors. The most lovable celebrity capacitor would have to be the "flux capacitor1." That capacitor ranked number one in a survey of Memphis Surplus employees.

"First invented by Ewald Georg von Kleist of Pomerania in Germany, the first recorded capacitor was a glass jar coated inside and out with metal. Not to be left out of the discovery is Dutch physicist Pieter van Musschenbroek who independently invented a a very similar capacitor in January 1746, before Kleist's discovery was widely known. The process of storing energy in the capacitor is known as "charging", and involves electric charges of equal magnitude, but opposite polarity, building up on each plate.

With another November firmly underway in Cleveland, Ohio most of us don’t have all that much besides the holidays (and spring) to look forward to.
